Are you interested in dental implants? Here’s what you need to know.

Dental implants are one of the best treatment options that dentistry has to offer.  They are the ideal way to replace missing teeth. Here are some things you should know if you are considering dental implants.

One of the major concerns many people have is the cost.  However, the cost of implants has improved over the years.  Also, many dental insurances now cover part of the cost.  Before any treatment begins, we will always give you an estimate of any out-of-pocket cost to you so you know what to expect.

While the upfront cost may be higher than other replacement options, dental implants usually last a lifetime making them the more economical choice in the long run.  For example, consider having to choose between a bridge or an implant.  A bridge involves crowning teeth on either side of the space in order to hold a fake tooth in its place.  Those teeth are still prone to decay and gum disease.  Therefore, the bridge would likely need to be replaced at some point making the overall long-term cost of having a bridge more than an implant.

Implants also preserve neighboring teeth.  Unlike the bridge, for example, they do not require operating on surrounding teeth.  In addition to saving teeth, an implant will also preserve the jaw bone.  After a tooth is taken out, the jaw bone in that area begins to diminish over time.  However, placing an implant in that space will prevent this bone loss.

Implants are also an excellent option for improving a patient’s ability to wear dentures.  Denture patients often struggle to wear dentures as the jaw bone shrinks over time.  In many cases, implants can be used to create an anchor for the denture greatly increasing their comfort, stability and function.
